Photographing Aix en Provence, France

Exploring Aix en Provence

While in Europe we spent a lot of time exploring and photographing Aix en Provence! This city has endless photographing opportunities and is any photographers dream with its unique streets, colorful buildings, and local markets. It was amazing experiencing this French town. I had never been to France before this and it is so different then the U.S. in so many different ways.

We arrived there on Saturday and spent Sunday simply exploring the town and getting to know the area. Aix en Provence is a medium sized town with a population of around 200,000 people. I would recommend staying here as it is a functioning town with many things to do and see, but still has that old European feeling that many new cities have lost.

Sunday we took a cab down to what is referred to as Old Town Provence. The architecture is beautiful and we walked around taking everything in for the first part of the day. Many of the streets were deserted and the shops closed for the day, however it was still fun to just explore. The streets are similar to a maze with long strips of buildings all connected, all leading into each other. These are some of the things we saw : )

The Beautiful Churches

We were walking down a street when we came across a beautiful old church. These churches are everywhere in Europe and they are built so beautifully. This one was from the 1400’s and was dimly lite with old paintings hanging all over the walls.

Fresh Local Market in Aix en Provence

We also came across a local market in the center of the old town. Vendors selling all different foods were setting up when we got there around 9am. There was all kinds of freshly baked bread, handmade sausages, and a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. There were also locals selling soaps, ad handmade lavender sachets as well. Im not sure if this is an everyday event or if it just happens on the weekends but it was a great place to look around and get some fresh fruit. We got some peaches and they were juicy and absolute delicious!

The Streets of Aix

There is not a street in old town Aix en Provence that doesn’t look like its straight out of a one of those European movies. You know the ones you have watched and dreamed about going there and walking down the narrow streets with a baguette in one hand and an espresso in the other? They truly are beautiful.
